What hCG is approved for, per its labels

The Novarel label lists prepubertal cryptorchidism and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in males, plus ovulation induction, as the uses.[23]

Both labels open their indications with a capitalised statement that hCG has not been demonstrated to be effective adjunctive therapy in obesity.[24]

Testosterone and muscle claims against the trials

In men with hypogonadism, hCG injections twice weekly raised testosterone with no significant difference from clomiphene or the combination.[4]

In older men with partial androgen deficiency, recombinant hCG raised lean body mass by about 2 kg.[7]

Strength did not follow: the same older-men trial found shoulder and knee strength was not significantly increased.[7]

In men with idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, gonadotropin replacement therapy was reported to decrease triglycerides and increase fat-free mass.[10]

The weight-loss claim in controlled trials

In a double-blind trial in obese women, hCG did not enhance weight loss compared with placebo on the same diet.[9]

A second placebo-controlled trial in obese women found no advantage for hCG on any recorded variable.[8]

A dated PubMed count (2026-10-02) finds 156 human-only and 124 animal records for hCG with weight terms; the large number reflects volume of writing rather than a demonstrated effect.

Calculated from goals file our PubMed count ledger; goal weight-loss; peptide hcg; query (("human chorionic gonadotropin"[tiab] OR "chorionic gonadotropin"[tiab] OR "chorionic gonadotrophin"[tiab] OR hCG[tiab] OR choriogonadotropin[tiab]) NOT (pregnan*[tiab] OR trophoblast*[tiab] OR choriocarcinoma[tiab] OR "germ cell"[tiab] OR hydatidiform[tiab] OR "embryo transfer"[tiab] OR oocyte*[tiab] OR "in vitro fertilization"[tiab] OR IVF[tiab] OR "ovarian stimulation"[tiab] OR "ovulation induction"[tiab] OR "ovarian hyperstimulation"[tiab] OR equine[tiab] OR eCG[tiab] OR "pregnant mare"[tiab])) AND ("weight loss"[tiab] OR "weight reduction"[tiab] OR "body weight"[tiab] OR obes*[tiab] OR overweight[tiab] OR adiposity[tiab] OR "fat mass"[tiab] OR "body fat"[tiab] OR "fat loss"[tiab]); date 2026-10-02; human only 156; animal 124. Bodybuilding use and its context

A doping-control study begins from the point that administering gonadotrophins is prohibited in sport.[6]

A case report describes a young woman admitted with ischaemic stroke after recent hCG use in a weight loss regimen, and notes thromboembolic risk with misuse.[25]

Common questions

Is hCG proven to work?

The strongest study we summarise for hCG is human rct evidence, among 17 studies. A trial result is not an approval; see the legal status.

What does hCG do?

The Novarel label says its action is virtually identical to pituitary luteinizing hormone, with a small degree of FSH activity.[23]

Is hCG good for weight loss?

Two placebo-controlled trials in the cached set found no advantage over placebo; one concluded there is no rationale for hCG injections in obesity.[8]
