What the labels say it does

The Humatrope label says somatropin binds to dimeric GH receptors on target-tissue cell membranes.[3]

Binding sets off signal transduction and the induction of GH-dependent proteins, including IGF-1, IGF BP-3 and acid-labile subunit.[3]

The label lists direct or IGF-1-mediated effects of stimulating chondrocyte differentiation, hepatic glucose output, protein synthesis and lipolysis.[3]

The Genotropin label states its powder is therapeutically equivalent to human growth hormone of pituitary origin.[1]

What studies show in tissue

In GH-deficient adults, low-dose GH was linked to a sustained deterioration of glucose metabolism through its lipolytic effect.[4]

Local rhGH injections into the patellar tendon raised tendon collagen synthesis in elderly men, directly or via local IGF-I.[5]

In elderly men retraining after leg immobilization, muscle cross-sectional area rose more with GH than with placebo.[6]

In GH-deficient adults, four months of rhGH treatment partly reversed sleep disturbances seen in untreated patients.[7]

How long it acts

The Norditropin label estimates a terminal half-life of about 7 to 10 hours after a subcutaneous dose in adults with GH deficiency.[2]

Common questions

How long does HGH act in the body?

The half-life values we found are 0.4 hours IV; 3.0 hours subcutaneous (intravenous (normal adults); subcutaneous (GHD adults), Genotropin); approximately 7 to 10 hours (subcutaneous (GHD patients), Norditropin). A half-life is how long the amount in the body takes to fall by half; it is not the same as how long an effect lasts.

How does HGH work in the body?

Per the Humatrope label, somatropin binds GH receptors, which induces IGF-1 and other GH-dependent proteins.[3]
