Does MOTS-c burn fat?
Fat burning has not been shown in humans. In mice, MOTS-c prevented obesity from a high-fat diet, which is prevention of gain rather than measured fat loss.
Mitochondrial-derived peptideUpdated
Short answer
Fat burning has not been shown in humans. In mice, MOTS-c prevented obesity from a high-fat diet, which is prevention of gain rather than measured fat loss.[1]
The proposed mechanism is cell-level: the authors say MOTS-c blocks the folate cycle and purine synthesis and so switches on AMPK.[1]
In breast cancer survivors, higher post-exercise natural MOTS-c went with lower fat mass, but this is an association in people who exercised, not an effect of taking the peptide.[2]
