What epitalon is

Epitalon is the tetrapeptide Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, built from the amino acid composition of Epithalamin, a bovine pineal gland extract.[6]

The review states that epitalon directly influences melatonin synthesis and enhances the activity of enzymes including telomerase, while noting the full mechanism is unclear.[6]

Mechanisms seen in cells

In human cell cultures, epitalon raised hTERT mRNA and telomerase enzyme activity, which is the proposed route to longer telomeres.[7]

In human gingival stem cells, epitalon raised mRNA of neuronal markers 1.6-1.8 times, and modelling suggested it binds histones H1/6 and H1/3, a proposed epigenetic mechanism.[8]

In serum, epitalon inhibited enkephalin-degrading enzymes with an IC50 of 500 microM and showed no interaction with mu or delta opioid receptors.[9]

In an antioxidant cell model of diabetic retinopathy, high glucose raised reactive oxygen species and epitalon reversed the associated wound-healing delay.[10]
