Evidence for longevity

Each row is an outcome related to longevity from a published study, strongest design first. Animal and cell results are labelled and are not human results. User reports are not counted as evidence here.

HGH for longevity: outcomes in published studies
OutcomeResultStudy typeSource
Lean mass and fatLean body mass increased with GH alone and with GH plus testosterone versus placebo; total body fat decreased only with the combination.Human RCTn = 80The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism 2006, PMID 16332938
Strength and quality of lifeMuscle strength changes were variable; one of six measures increased significantly with GH plus testosterone.Human RCTn = 80The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism 2006, PMID 16332938
Protein synthesis in older adultsLow-dose GH increased protein synthesis in healthy aged women and men, and testosterone plus GH enhanced this in men (a whole-body protein-turnover measure).Human RCTMetabolism: clinical and experimental 2005, PMID 16125527
Muscle strengthGH did not improve muscle strength over strength training alone in elderly men.Human RCTn = 18The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism 1994, PMID 7525633
Overall benefit and harmLimited evidence suggests GH might offer diverse benefits with few adverse effects in older patients with comorbidities.Systematic reviewGrowth hormone & IGF research 2024, PMID 38489867
LDL cholesterolTotal cholesterol fell 4-8% and LDL cholesterol 11-16%; HDL and triglycerides were unchanged.Systematic reviewn = 534European journal of endocrinology 2011, PMID 21339335
Blood pressure and bone densityBlood pressure and bone mineral density were not consistently affected.Systematic reviewn = 534European journal of endocrinology 2011, PMID 21339335
Body compositionLean body mass rose 2-5% and fat mass fell 7-10% in four studies; two other studies found no change.Systematic reviewn = 534European journal of endocrinology 2011, PMID 21339335

How strong is it?

A human randomized trial outweighs any number of animal studies. Animal and cell results show a mechanism worth testing, not that it works in people.

Healthy ageing in plain terms

MedlinePlus notes that people in the U.S. are living longer and the number of older adults is growing.[6]

Trials in older people

The largest trial was a 6-month study of 80 healthy older men randomized to GH, testosterone, both or placebo.[1]

Lean body mass rose with GH alone and with GH plus testosterone compared with placebo.[1]

In elderly men, GH had no effect on muscle strength at any time.[3]

A randomized study of healthy older men and women concluded low-dose GH increases protein synthesis, with testosterone adding to the effect in men.[2]

A systematic review in older patients with comorbidities said limited evidence suggests GH might offer diverse benefits with few adverse effects.[4]

Size of the literature

The goal-ledger query run 2026-10-02 for longevity terms found 157 human-only and 84 animal-only PubMed records mentioning growth hormone terms; the count is of papers, not of life-extension findings.

Common questions

Does HGH help with longevity?

The strongest study we summarise for longevity is human rct evidence, across 5 studies with an outcome for longevity. A trial result is not an approval; see the legal status.

Is HGH approved for longevity?

HGH is FDA approved (prescription only). Which conditions that approval covers is set by the label; use for anything else is off-label.

What is the best peptide for longevity?

There is no single answer. Our longevity overview compares each candidate by evidence grade and legal status rather than by popularity.

Does HGH slow ageing?

No cited trial measured lifespan or ageing itself; they measured body composition, strength and protein turnover.

Calculated from trials cited on page 5; trials measuring lifespan 0. Formula: lifespan or ageing-rate outcomes among cited studies = 0 of 5
