Evidence for heart health
Each row is an outcome related to heart health from a published study, strongest design first. Animal and cell results are labelled and are not human results. User reports are not counted as evidence here.
| Outcome | Result | Study type | Source |

| Major adverse cardiovascular events | Major events occurred in 3.8% on oral semaglutide vs 4.8% on placebo (hazard ratio 0.79, 95% CI 0.57 to 1.11), establishing noninferiority. | Human RCTn = 3183 | The New England journal of medicine 2019, PMID 31185157 |
| Cardiovascular death, MI or stroke | The primary composite occurred in 6.6% on semaglutide vs 8.9% on placebo (hazard ratio 0.74, 95% CI 0.58 to 0.95). | Human RCTn = 3297 | The New England journal of medicine 2016, PMID 27633186 |

How strong is it?
A human randomized trial outweighs any number of animal studies. Animal and cell results show a mechanism worth testing, not that it works in people.
What heart disease means
MedlinePlus describes coronary artery disease, the most common type, as plaque slowly building up in the arteries that supply the heart muscle.[9]
A dated PubMed count (2026-10-02) finds 906 human-only and 38 animal records for semaglutide with heart-health terms; the count shows how much has been written, not how well it works.
Calculated from goals file our PubMed count ledger; goal heart-health; peptide semaglutide; query (semaglutide[tiab] OR Ozempic[tiab] OR Wegovy[tiab] OR Rybelsus[tiab] OR NN9535[tiab]) AND (cardiovascular[tiab] OR cardiac[tiab] OR heart[tiab] OR myocard*[tiab] OR cardiomyopath*[tiab] OR atheroscler*[tiab] OR coronary[tiab] OR arrhythmi*[tiab]); date 2026-10-02; human only 906; animal 38. Formula: count of PubMed records for the dated query with the stated filter (humans not animals, and animals not humans)
Heart outcomes semaglutide trials measured
In adults with established heart disease and overweight or obesity but no diabetes, SELECT found a major cardiovascular event in 6.5% on semaglutide and 8.0% on placebo.[3]
In adults with type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk, the first major event came in 6.6% on semaglutide against 8.9% on placebo.[7]
In heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and obesity, a trial reported a symptom-score change of 16.6 points on semaglutide against 8.7 on placebo.[4]
Not every heart measure moved: a PET-MRI trial in people with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease saw no significant difference in carotid plaque inflammation at week 26.[1]
A meta-analysis of semaglutide in overweight or obesity pooled three trials covering 24 084 participants and reported a relative risk of 0.83 for death from cardiovascular causes.[8]
Safety points that matter to people with heart disease
The Ozempic label reports that 0.5 mg and 1 mg doses raised mean heart rate by 2 to 3 beats per minute in placebo-controlled trials.[10]
In SELECT, adverse events leading to permanent discontinuation occurred in 16.6% of semaglutide patients and 8.2% of placebo patients.[3]
The type 2 diabetes cardiovascular trial also reported more retinopathy complications on semaglutide.[7]

Does Semaglutide help with heart health?
The strongest study we summarise for heart health is human rct evidence, across 8 studies with an outcome for heart health. A trial result is not an approval; see the legal status.
Is Semaglutide approved for heart health?
Semaglutide is FDA approved (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus). Which conditions that approval covers is set by the label; use for anything else is off-label.
What is the best peptide for heart health?
There is no single answer. Our heart health overview compares each candidate by evidence grade and legal status rather than by popularity.
Is semaglutide good for the heart?
The only wording this page can support is trial-specific: in adults with established cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity, weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg lowered the composite of cardiovascular death, heart attack and stroke compared with placebo.[3]
Can semaglutide help heart failure?
One trial in obesity-related heart failure with preserved ejection fraction reported a 6-minute walk change of 21.5 m on semaglutide against 1.2 m on placebo.[4]
