Studies that enrolled only women

Each row is a study whose participants were described as women only. Results from one sex are not evidence for the other. Studies of animals and cells are not included.

How strong is it?

Strongest evidence:Human RCT evidence, 4 of 4

A human randomized trial outweighs any number of animal studies. Animal and cell results show a mechanism worth testing, not that it works in people.

Women's health context

MedlinePlus notes that pregnancy and conditions of the female organs are among the unique issues women face.[11]

Studies that involved only women

A double-blind trial in women on the same diet found no statistically significant difference between hCG and placebo in weight loss or hunger ratings.[2]

A second trial in obese women given hCG or saline injections found no advantage for hCG on any recorded variable.[1]

A case report describes a 29-year-old woman who had an ischaemic stroke after hCG use in a weight loss regimen.[3]

Women-specific label text

The Novarel label says hCG may cause fetal harm when given to a pregnant woman.[12]

The Pregnyl label says it is not indicated in pregnancy.[13]

The Pregnyl label warns of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, a serious event that may progress rapidly.[13]

The labelled female use is induction of ovulation in anovulatory, infertile women after appropriate pretreatment.[12]

Common questions

Has hCG been studied in women?

3 studies we summarise enrolled only women. Results from one sex are not evidence for the other.

Is hCG approved for women?

hCG is FDA approved (prescription only). The label sets who it is approved for; use outside it is off-label.

Does hCG work for weight loss in women?

Both placebo-controlled trials in women found it did not; one concluded there is no rationale for its use in obesity.[1]

What does the Pregnyl label say about hCG in pregnancy?

The Pregnyl label says there are no data on the use of hCG in pregnancy.[13]
