A human randomized trial outweighs any number of animal studies. Animal and cell results show a mechanism worth testing, not that it works in people.

MedlinePlus notes that women have unique health issues, including pregnancy, menopause and conditions of the female organs.[12]

Pregnancy and planned pregnancy in the labels

The Wegovy label says it may cause fetal harm and that weight loss offers a pregnant patient no benefit.[13]

Wegovy's label asks that treatment stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy because of semaglutide's long half-life.[13]

The Ozempic label reaches the same 2-month point for women, citing a long washout period.[14]

For pregnancy data the Ozempic label says only limited data exist to inform a drug-associated risk.[14]

Breastfeeding and oral contraceptives in the labels

The Ozempic label states there are no data on semaglutide in human milk, on the infant, or on milk production.[14]

The tablets label reports a clinical lactation study with semaglutide concentrations below the lower limit of quantification in human breast milk.[15]

For the tablets, the label still says breastfeeding is not recommended, citing the SNAC ingredient.[15]

An Ozempic drug-interaction study assessed the oral contraceptive ethinylestradiol/levonorgestrel at steady state.[14]
