Sermorelin Results: What Studies Measured and When
What published studies measured for Sermorelin, when those outcomes were measured, and what is still unproven.
What studies measured
Each outcome below comes from a published study, with its type and size, strongest design first. Animal and cell results are labelled as such and are not human results.
| Outcome | Result | Study type | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| GH and IGF-I in old men | Two weeks of twice-daily GHRH injections reversed age-related decreases in GH and IGF-I in healthy old men; body composition was not measured. | Human RCTn = 10 | The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism 1992, PMID 1379256 |
| Serum IGF-1 | Mean IGF-1 rose from 159.5 ng/mL at baseline to 239.0 ng/mL after combined GHRP/sermorelin therapy (retrospective, multi-peptide combination, no control). | Human observationaln = 14 | American journal of men's health 2017, PMID 28830317 |
| Body composition | Weight, BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, DEXA muscle and fat, muscle histology, glucose, insulin and lipids did not change. | Human uncontrolled trialn = 11 | Metabolism: clinical and experimental 1997, PMID 9005976 |
| Muscle strength | Two of six strength measures (upright row, shoulder press) and abdominal-crunch endurance improved; the other measures did not. | Human uncontrolled trialn = 11 | Metabolism: clinical and experimental 1997, PMID 9005976 |
| IGF-I | Nightly GHRH raised nocturnal GH release but IGF-I did not change. | Human uncontrolled trialn = 11 | Metabolism: clinical and experimental 1997, PMID 9005976 |
| Height velocity | Mean height velocity rose from 4.1 cm/yr at baseline to 8.0 cm/yr at 6 months and 7.2 cm/yr at 12 months (open-label, no control group). | Human uncontrolled trialn = 110 | The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism 1996, PMID 8772599 |
| Regulatory status and evidence for physique claims | The review notes no regulatory approval for physique- or performance-related indications of these peptides, including sermorelin. | Review | Frontiers in endocrinology 2026, PMID 42395176 |
| Geref availability (US) | The US maker announced discontinuation of Geref (recombinant GHRH, sermorelin) in July 2008. | Review | The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism 2009, PMID 19509104 |
| Growth in GH-deficient children | Limited data suggest that once-daily subcutaneous sermorelin was effective in some prepubertal children with idiopathic GH deficiency. | Review | BioDrugs 1999, PMID 18031173 |
| Compared with somatropin | Increases in height velocity with subcutaneous sermorelin 30 microg/kg bodyweight per day were less than with once-daily subcutaneous somatropin 30 microg/kg bodyweight. | Review | BioDrugs 1999, PMID 18031173 |
- Sermorelin (GHRH 1-29) was FDA-approved as Geref for diagnosis and treatment of GH deficiency in children and was later discontinued by its manufacturer (see 19509104 for the 2008 discontinuation). No current FDA label exists.
- Older papers (1379256, 9005976) call the peptide GHRH-(1-29), which is the sermorelin sequence (18031173 describes sermorelin as the 29 amino acid analogue of GHRH); they do not use the word sermorelin.
- The only studies in the evidence are small: one uncontrolled pediatric trial (110 children), two small adult studies of GHRH(1-29) in older men (10 and 11 men), and one retrospective chart review (14 men) in which sermorelin was combined with GHRP-6 and GHRP-2.
- No human study of sermorelin was found in PubMed as of 2 October 2026 for hair growth, sleep, menopause or perimenopause, women, energy, belly fat, or bodybuilding. The adult studies were in men; none measured sleep or hair.
- No half-life data for sermorelin were found.
Typical timeline
When the studies above measured their outcomes. This is the study schedule, not a promise of when anyone will notice a change.
| When | What was measured | Study type | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| day 14 of each treatment | GH profile and IGF-I | Human RCTn = 10 | The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism 1992, PMID 1379256 |
| 6 and 12 months | Height velocity measured | Human uncontrolled trialn = 110 | The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism 1996, PMID 8772599 |

Common questions
How long does Sermorelin take to work?
The studies we summarise measured outcomes at set points, for example GH profile and IGF-I at day 14 of each treatment; Height velocity measured at 6 and 12 months. Timelines outside studies vary.
Do you show Sermorelin before and after photos?
No. Photos can't be verified, rarely show dose, diet or other drugs, and only the most dramatic ones get posted. We summarize measured outcomes instead.
