What the few human reports of BPC-157 actually show
The best-known human result is a small chart review of knee injections, in which 14 of 16 patients reported relief; it had no control group and used a phone survey rather than a measured outcome.[3]
The authors of that knee report say they used no standard instrument for function or quality of life, so the relief figure is self-rated pain only.[3]
A 12-woman bladder pilot with no comparison arm reported all 12 scoring 5/5 on a questionnaire after a single injection session.[2]
The only intravenous human data come from a very small pilot, and the report looked at safety markers rather than any benefit.[1]
Tendon, muscle, gut, liver, eye and heart claims: what was tested in animals
For tendon and injury recovery, the cited work is a rat study in which the Achilles tendon was cut; treated rats had better strength and function than controls.[28]
The muscle claim rests on rat experiments of crush injury under steroid treatment, which test healing of injured muscle and not muscle growth in healthy animals.[17]
The gut claim comes from rat ulcer models, where the intramuscular route outperformed the intragastric route.[29]
The liver claim is mouse and rat-cell data on radiation injury, with the peptide given by mouth.[7]
The eye claim is a rat glaucoma model with drops, injections or drinking water, not a human eye study.[10]
The heart claim is a rat model of drug-induced heart attack, where treated animals showed lower blood markers of heart-muscle damage.[8]
The skin claim comes from burn experiments in mice using a cream.[30]
Where the claims outrun the studies
A systematic review found 36 studies, of which 35 were preclinical and 1 clinical, and flagged that no clinical safety data were found.[4]
The same review concludes only that the peptide shows promise, and warns that adverse effects are possible because of unregulated manufacturing or unknown clinical safety.[4]
A PubMed title/abstract search run on 2 Oct 2026 for BPC-157 combined with patients, clinical trial or randomized returned 25 records out of 230 for the peptide overall; the 25 includes any record using those words, not only human trials of BPC-157.
Calculated from search ("BPC-157"[tiab] OR BPC157[tiab] OR "body protection compound"[tiab] OR "pentadecapeptide BPC"[tiab]) AND (patients[tiab] OR clinical trial[pt] OR randomized[tiab]); date 2026-10-02; count 25; total peptide records 230; source web/src/data/evidence/bpc-157.json searches. Formula: share = count / totalPeptideRecords = 25 / 230
No cached study measured neuropathy, heart-health or eye outcomes in people; the neuropathy-type claim is represented only by a rat spinal-cord injury model.[12]

Common questions
Is BPC-157 proven to work?
The strongest study we summarise for BPC-157 is human observational evidence, among 25 studies. That is not proof it works in people.
What does BPC-157 do?
In rat tendon cells grown in a dish, the peptide increased cell migration, which is the mechanism proposed for faster tendon healing in animals.[31]
What is BPC-157 used for?
In the small human reports the uses were knee pain injections and bladder-wall injections for interstitial cystitis, both as uncontrolled series.[2]
