Full detail, including drug-testing windows, is on the BPC-157 half-life page.

Where the sequence comes from and what pathway has been named

The 15-amino-acid sequence is a fragment of a protein first isolated from human gastric juice.[3]

In rat tendon fibroblasts grown in the lab, the effect on cell migration is proposed to run through the FAK-paxillin pathway.[3]

The systematic review says the animal literature points to growth hormone receptor expression, growth and angiogenesis pathways, and fewer inflammatory cytokines.[2]

Blood vessels and the nitric oxide system in rats

In a rat model of colon ischemia, the authors conclude the peptide restored blood supply and that the nitric oxide system is involved.[4]

A different rat fistula study found the benefits did not change when nitric oxide generation was blocked, so the NO role is not settled.[5]

In rats with drug-induced heart attack, the proposed mechanism is counteraction of an occlusion-like syndrome.[6]

In rat glaucoma the claimed mechanism is faster recruitment of collateral vessels after vein cauterization.[7]

Liver and nerve mechanisms from rodent work

In irradiated mice and rat liver cells, silencing of a transcription factor called KLF4 removed the protection.[8]

In rats with spinal cord injury, a single early injection was followed by less axon loss and motor-neuron loss.[9]

Why the half-life matters, and what is unknown

In rats and beagle dogs the unchanged peptide was cleared quickly, which is the only cached pharmacokinetic measurement.[1]

The same review cannot name a human mechanism study: it counted 1 clinical study among 36.[2]

Common questions

How long does BPC-157 act in the body?

The half-life values we found are less than 30 min (IV and IM (single and repeated), rat, beagle dog); less than 30 minutes (not stated (review summary), review of preclinical data). A half-life is how long the amount in the body takes to fall by half; it is not the same as how long an effect lasts.

Does BPC-157 work?

The review concludes that it shows promise based on level IV and V evidence, which are the weakest tiers of study design.[2]

How long does BPC-157 take to work?

No cached human study reports a time course; in the rat tendon study, assessments were made on days 1, 4, 7, 10 and 14.[10]
