Does enclomiphene work?
On the one thing it was tested for, yes: in a small phase II trial in men with secondary hypogonadism, total testosterone at day 42 on the top enclomiphene dose averaged 604 ng/dL, in the same range as the testosterone gel group (500 ng/dL). This is a hormone measure, not a symptom outcome.
Short answer
On the one thing it was tested for, yes: in a small phase II trial in men with secondary hypogonadism, total testosterone at day 42 on the top enclomiphene dose averaged 604 ng/dL, in the same range as the testosterone gel group (500 ng/dL). This is a hormone measure, not a symptom outcome.[1]
In the phase III studies in overweight men, enclomiphene also kept sperm concentration in the normal range, whereas the testosterone gel group saw a marked fall in sperm production.[2]
What pooled studies add
A meta-analysis in men with obesity-related low testosterone pooled the enclomiphene studies separately and found an average testosterone rise of 7.50 nmol/L.[3]
The same authors say the clinical meaning of that rise, and the long-term safety picture, still need longer studies, so the evidence stops short of showing a payoff beyond the hormone numbers.[3]
